Beyond the Desktop

Patrick Hayes, Ph.D.

The basic design of the Apple/PC user interface was created over 20 years ago and has not changed in its essentials since. It is fundamentally application/file-centric: each window belongs to an application, and communication between them is done by passing files and and out of storage.

It is time to re-think this 'desktop' GUI and find a better one. This talk surveys some preliminary ideas towards what it would take to support a GUI based on the metaphor of the computer as a workshop, where tools are brought to the work, rather than the work handed to applications.

I would like to use this as an opportunity to get some fairly wide-ranging discussion started on this topic here at IHMC, so if you are at all interested, please come along. Maybe we can start the next technological revolution here at Silicon Beach.
