Cmap, The Tool

Alberto J. Cañas

Institute for Human and Machine Cognition

For several years, we have been developing CmapTools: a software toolkit that supports the construction and sharing of knowledge models based on concept maps. What started as hard-wired code to support a knowledge elicitation effort during the construction of an expert system has evolved into a program that includes a wide variety of features. These features enable users of all ages, from elementary school children to scientists from over 150 countries, to build and share their knowledge models. In this talk, we will present a history of the development of the software, will touch on many of the applications within and outside of IHMC that have used it, will discuss some of the key aspects of the software, and will examine the research issues that are part of the project.
